Recent Advances in Photosensors and Radiation Detectors for Nuclear Science and High Energy Physics (#3391)

M. Bombonati1

1 Hamamatsu Photonics Italia Srl, Arese, Italy

Abstract

Hamamatsu Photonics continues to develop a broad portfolio of photosensors and radiation detector technologies addressing the evolving requirements of nuclear science, high energy physics, medical imaging, and related applications. This presentation will provide an overview of recent developments across several detector platforms, including silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), advanced silicon electron multiplication devices, vacuum photodetectors, and emerging radiation detection technologies. Particular attention will be given to ongoing efforts aimed at improving photon detection efficiency, noise performance, timing characteristics, operation in demanding environments and detector integration. The presentation is intended as an overview of current development activities, providing attendees with insights into emerging detector solutions and their potential impact on future nuclear science and high energy physics experiments.

AcknowledgmentThe work presented here reflects the contributions of numerous colleagues across Hamamatsu Photonics. The author gratefully acknowledges the efforts of the photosensor, detector, device development and application engineering teams in Japan, whose expertise and continuous innovation make these developments possible.

Abstract

Jinan Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Sciences is a research platform established by the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Our team focuses on nuclear technology applications in three key areas: non-destructive testing, radiation monitoring, and molecular imaging. We have developed and industrialized a broad portfolio of nuclear instruments. This presentation introduces our recent achievements and flagship products.

Non-destructive testing — We invented the world's first curved-surface XRF spectrometer used for cultural heritage conservation, producing high-resolution 3D elemental maps of irregular bronze and jade relics. It has analyzed precious artifacts for the Palace Museum and other museums.

Radiation monitoring — Our portfolio includes personal dosimeters, portable gamma cameras, radionuclide identifiers, neutron detectors, and nuclear electronics modules. Over 3,000 units are in service at universities, nuclear power plants, and hospitals. Our digital monitoring system supports wide-area imaging and semi-quantitative analysis to safeguard plant operations.

Molecular imaging — Our panoramic small-animal PET-CT offers a 213 mm axial FOV, capturing whole-body dynamic rat imaging in a single bed position at sub-millimeter resolution for radiopharmaceutical R&D. XTOMO-CUBE, the world's smallest micro-CT, is compact, portable, and domestically built, delivering micron-resolution 3D reconstruction for archaeology, materials research, and teaching.

Core components — We have also independently developed 150 kV X-ray source components with decetn  in-lab performance, and we are carrying out equipment integration to further validate and optimize this technology.

Visit us at Booth 53 for specifications, application cases, and live demos. We look forward to discussing collaboration with you.
